This Week at The H is a weekly feature here at Verso. Stop in each Monday to find out what’s happening throughout the week at The Huntington!
Yesterday was the 101st birthday of the late great Woody Guthrie, who just last year was the subject of a rollicking academic conference co-sponsored by the Huntington-USC Institute on California and the West. Read the Verso post here, and head to our iTunes U site to listen to some of the conference presentations.
Tomorrow will be the 100th anniversary of the marriage of Henry and Arabella Huntington, our founding couple whose lives and riches are explored in The Art of Wealth, a new book by former Huntington art curator Shelley Bennett. Look for a Verso post tomorrow!
We have a Tropical Nursery Tour on Sunday from 1:30–3 p.m. Go behind the scenes with Dylan Hannon, The Huntington’s curator of tropical collections, for a tour of the botanical nurseries where rare orchids, aroids, ferns, and carnivorous plants are grown. Event is free with general admission, but reservations are required. THIS EVENT IS SOLD OUT.
COMING SOON: Later this month—on July 27—we open a new exhibition in the West Hall of the Library. “Illuminated Palaces: Extra-Illustrated Books from the Huntington Library” will look at the eccentric art of extra-illustration, a once-popular process of modifying printed books with materials ranging from original art to autograph letters. We have some images and animated GIFs over on our Tumblr, so head over and take a peek.
For information on events that require registration and/or additional fees, please check out the calendar on The Huntington’s website.
